Should you run ads during your quiet season?

By Nico · 16 October 2026 · 4 min read

Almost every local business has a quiet season. For landscapers it’s winter. For heating engineers it’s summer. For roofers it’s often a long dry spell. The natural reaction is to switch off the ads and save money until things pick up.

Sometimes that’s the right call. But often, switching off completely does more harm than good.

Why switching off can cost you

You lose your place

When you stop and start ads, it takes time to get back up to speed. Google uses past performance to decide how often your ads show and how much you pay. A fresh start can mean higher costs for the first few weeks.

Competitors pick up the work

Demand might be lower, but it isn’t zero. If you switch off and your competitors don’t, they get the jobs that are still out there, often at a cheaper price, because fewer businesses are bidding.

You’re not ready for the rush

When things pick up again, the businesses that stayed visible tend to get the first calls. If you’re restarting from scratch, you’re playing catch-up.

Smarter ways to handle a quiet season

Turn down, not off

Reduce your budget rather than pausing completely. You stay visible, keep your account’s history, and still pick up the jobs that are around.

Focus on your most reliable services

Some services stay steady all year. For one roofing account I manage, roof repairs kept bringing in cheap leads all summer while other work went quiet, so that’s where the budget went.

Book future work early

Quiet periods are a great time to promote work for later. Landscapers can take spring bookings in winter. Heating engineers can promote boiler servicing in summer, before the cold arrives.

Run a seasonal offer

A free survey, a winter discount or a “book now for spring” offer can fill gaps in your diary.

Get ahead on the basics

Use the quieter time to improve your website, update your Google Business Profile and collect reviews, so everything works harder when demand comes back.

When it’s fine to pause

There are times when pausing makes sense:

  • You’re fully booked and genuinely can’t take on more work
  • You’re closed or away
  • Your budget is very tight and needs to go elsewhere for a while

Even then, it’s worth planning when you’ll switch back on, ideally a few weeks before things get busy.

The short version

Quiet seasons are normal. Instead of switching off, turn things down, focus on what still works, and use the time to get ahead. When the busy season arrives, you’ll be ready.
